Covid-19 Lockdown moments

Did you know that Golden Retrievers may share more with us than just their love and loyalty?

A major study from the University of Cambridge found that many behavioural and emotional traits in Golden Retrievers—such as anxiety, sociability, and trainability—share the same genetic foundations as similar traits in humans.

Researchers analysed the DNA and behaviour of more than 1,300 Golden Retrievers and identified 12 genes linked to canine behaviour that are also associated with human cognitive and emotional traits.

Some fascinating examples include:
🐾 Intelligence – A gene associated with cognitive performance in humans was linked to sociability and aggression in Golden Retrievers.
🐾 Anxiety – Genetic variants that make some Goldens more nervous or fearful are also associated with human mood disorders, anxiety, and a tendency to dwell on negative experiences.
🐾 Trainability – Genes involved in emotional sensitivity and willingness to learn in dogs mirror those that influence emotional regulation in people.

While we've always known that dogs form incredible emotional bonds with us, this research provides strong evidence that some of those shared behaviours are rooted in the same biology.

It's a fascinating reminder that our relationship with dogs may be much deeper than we ever imagined.

The full study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) for anyone interested in reading more.
